HarvestPlus successfully organized first stakeholders meeting for ‘Establishing Sustainable Systems for Development and Deployment of Biofortified Crops in Bihar and Odisha’ on the 15-16 January, 2018 in Patna. Biofortification is an innovative approach that complements other existing nutrition interventions, and is evidence-based, cost-effective, and sustainable. Multi-disciplinary stakeholders attended the meeting including the Department of Agriculture, Government of Bihar, The Coalition for Food and Nutrition Security (Coalition), State Agricultural Universities, Indian Council from Agricultural Research (ICAR), International Agriculture Research Centers, socially responsible businesses, policy and advocacy bodies and Civil Society Organisations. The two-day meeting provided a platform to understand the existing product research undertaken in biofortified crops (zinc wheat, zinc rice and iron lentils) and possible effective strategies for dissemination, promotions and advocacy to create demand and awareness about the benefits of consumptions at the household levels to address malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency popularly known as hidden hunger.
